Beneath the Trees

Through the portal, we made our way from the city to nature’s sanctuary. As we walk, the humidity clings to our skin. I am overly aware of the mosquitoes, gnats, and flies drawn to my sweat. Even amid the battle with the winged fiends, I find myself noticing. I am vividly aware of nature surrounding us. It is as if a veil has been removed. The stress and worries of the week have melted away. I have returned to myself in the midst of nature’s silent melodies. I enter an introspective state.

We uncovered a new path with ancient trees. I am enraptured by them. I don’t know why I often find myself in awe of trees. I like to imagine they can speak. If we are quiet enough, respectful enough, maybe we can hear them.

Each encounter is unique, like meeting someone new and discovering their story.

As we follow the gravel paths, I stand beneath trees whose weathered arms reach across the forest’s ceiling, holding up the sky in reverence to the Creator who made them and sustains them.

I hear God’s invitation to remember the encounters that ground me: quiet mornings, birdsong, the smell of coffee, towering trees, silence, blue mountains, sunsets, and sunrises. They draw me back to the Creator who speaks quietly and whose presence echoes through nature, beckoning me to awaken to His presence.

Beneath the trees, I commune with God. When I find myself back in the city, I realize I have heard something I needed to remember. I leave more myself.
