The Sacred Invitation of Stepping Outside

There are seasons when life doesn’t feel calm or steady.

It feels loud. The kind of loud that settles into your chest and leaves your spirit tired.

Lately, I’ve found myself in that kind of season. Between uncertainty, responsibilities, and the quiet weight of things, what usually grounds us can become hard to reach. During these seasons, God can feel distant. The noise makes it harder to hear Him.

Billy Graham once said, “The moments that you don’t ‘feel’ anything are the moments when He may be the closest, because that’s the moment when you must walk by sheer faith.”

In the middle of that overwhelm, I’ve noticed something gentle.

Not in my to-do list.
Not in pushing through.
But outside.

Stepping into the quiet of nature, I begin to notice things I usually overlook. The trees aren’t rushing. The sky isn’t striving. And somehow, being surrounded by that steadiness reminds my body and soul that I don’t have to be either.

There is a gentler way of living. One where I am held, even in the midst of suffering.

Psalm 23:1–3 tells us:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Nature becomes a place where God gently reminds us:

You are held.
You are not behind.
You are allowed to rest.

Psalm 19:1 says,
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

When everything inside feels chaotic, creation reflects a different reality. One rooted in God’s peace.

It doesn’t always happen instantly.

But slowly, quietly… something softens.
Your breathing deepens.
Your thoughts begin to untangle.
Your body comes out of that constant state of alert.

And in that space, your heart begins to hear again.

Restoration happens there.

Gentle Ways to Let God Meet You Outside

  • Take a ten-minute walk
  • Sit outside with your coffee and breathe slowly
  • Watch the sunrise or sunset
  • Say a simple prayer or read a devotional while sitting in nature.

You don’t have to carry everything all at once.

Sometimes, healing doesn’t begin with doing more but with stepping outside and letting God meet you there.

Even in the chaotic seasons of our lives, He is still there, inviting us to meet Him in the quiet beauty of nature.
