December has come, and with it we were embraced with the season’s first snow. It is an invitation to slow down and a fitting beginning to the Christmas season. I find myself reflecting on the Holidays. I love this time of year—and yet, it can be a heavy season for many. There can also be pressure to uphold traditions or make every holiday event perfect. Sometimes our expectations for this time of year are unrealistic, given our capacity. We can slip into trying to please everyone or rush to do everything, missing the season and not being fully present with those around us, or even with God. We find ourselves exhausted and burned out.
I think we forget that God’s expectations for us are different from human expectations. He does not require us to be constantly busy or to perform. Often, we place burdens on ourselves when they were never required of us.
Matthew 11:28–30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus invites us to rest: These burdens we or others create are not ours to carry. We can let go of expectations not from God. No matter our current circumstances—even if life is difficult this season—He is present with us. He is Emmanuel.
John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
This December, I am committing to soaking in the holidays. I am devoting myself to a slow pace and being more intentional. “Soaking in the Holidays” calls us to slow down, notice, and be present. It means not focusing on stress, worries, pressure, or performing. It is allowing ourselves to say no to unnecessary commitments. It is being present with the one who desires to be with us.
A few ways I am practicing this are taking time for Advent and being intentional, even if it is not perfect, and being content with imperfections. I created an Advent display using old candles, and I think there is beauty in honoring God and honoring our capacity. In the evenings, I’ve been taking a moment to drink gingerbread tea, savor it, sit in God’s presence, and slow down to be present with family.

This month, take time to plan moments to soak in the Christmas season. Here are some ideas below. When you’re done reading, reflect on Matthew 11:28-30, take a moment to savor a favorite Christmas drink, and soak in the solitude with Jesus—resting in His presence.
May you soak in the light, the beauty, and the gentle rhythms of this season
and may Christ’s peace settle softly over your heart.
